“I am Jenny Gwinn, former middle school teacher, former media specialist, current bread making, chicken raising, garden tending, Bible teaching, homeschool mama.”
When did you begin homeschooling?
13 years ago in 2013
How did you begin homeschooling?
I had taught for ten years. Our daughter had been in K4 and K5 in a private school, and I had just had my son. My husband and I decided we didn’t like the idea of daycare for our infant and private school tuition while I went off to teach and take care of other children. It just didn’t make sense, so we decided to try homeschooling for a few years.
What is your homeschool style?
I have a teaching background, so I think I tend to be very traditional with our schedules and requirements. However, I have learned to let some of that go, and have become flexible with our schedules, understanding that learning happens everywhere, not just in a classroom setting. I’m constantly reading and learning about various teaching methods and try incorporate good practices into our day. I guess I would say I’m transforming and adapting each year to try and become what my kids need at the time.
What is your favorite thing about homeschooling?
The beauty of being able to spend time with my children; the ability to adapt their education to their interests and abilities.
What are/were your homeschool wins?
We have grown closer as a family. We enjoy each other’s company. Also, I have watched our children thrive and enjoy learning.
What would you do differently?
I wouldn’t have been so hard on myself, especially at the beginning. Coming out of the public school as a teacher was difficult. I had to break the mold I had been placed in and learn how to teach in a way that benefited my children instead of checking boxes and pushing through just to keep at a breakneck pace.
Who inspires you to continue homeschooling?
My husband. He works so hard to make sure we are cared for and has made so many sacrifices for us to continue on this adventure.
